The Time Machine & Social Changes, Transitions

The book name is ‘’The Time Machine’’ and it is scientific fiction novella by written H.G. Wells, published in 1895 and written as a frame narrative. This book is about the time travelling which is popular concept in movie sector. The main character called as a Time Traveler in the story. The story started in the London and time is probably 19th century, namely machine time. He argues that he found the time machine and he can go and back future or past. There some film adaptation and lots of comics about this book. The writer tried to explain the future with social change and the expectation shows in opposite the popular side. In this article, we will explain the social change theories with the book.

First of all, the social change is the transformation in the organization of the society and in patterns of thought and behavior over time, there are some concepts of change, which are development, progress, transformation, transition and reproduction. Also, it shows the variations over time in the relationship among individuals, group, organizations, cultures and societies. The book gives us three groups of people; Eloi, Morlocks and England elites but we will focus on the Eloi and Morlocks. These two groups have unique skills, structure, culture, language, health in their social context and we will compare our contemporary age with the future age narrative. The Eloi seem gathering society and Morlocks seem Hunter society but both of them, differ from the people because they have some differences, such as different body shapes, emotions and so on. It shows us that there is an evolution in time.

The time traveler arrived the year of Eight Hundred Two Thousand Seven Hundred One. Moreover, this distant future is not seem as expected because there is no any development; technology, culture, architecture, art, language etc. The time traveler met with the Eloi who live up side of the world and they act like a child. They don’t have any hierarchy; language is so simple so he learnt the language easily because they don’t have so many words. The language is the most important symbol of the culture, the language shows that they are basic and they live without any ambition. The humanity seem turn to first people because they just gather fruits and there is no hierarchical difference each other, the opposite of today. The morphogenetic processes can happen because everything is new and basic, it must be long- term processes because these simplicities cannot happen in a short time. They wear the same cloths and they just eat, sleep and live so this kind of fabrication of people, but simple one. They don’t have any economic issues and they sleep together like pack because the only fair of ‘’dark’’. The fear is coming from Morlocks because the Morlocks have different body shapes, they love the dark and scared from the light, also they have attention, practice to machines. Also, they eat meats. They looking like a monster and this show that evolution happened. Interestingly, the Morlocks serve the Eloi’s and The Morlocks meets their needs.

There is two races and two class because one of them serve another and other one live like animal, don’t have any ambition about anything. It references two class; aristocrats and working class. The Elois are lazy and happy, because they don’t have to do anything, they live and they don’t have any fear; only dark. The happy find them for a chance, they lost their pro activity in this way, they arrived the simple life with little organization. Also, they can be rich class without any ownership. This is second quest about the social class of the Elois. However, the Morlocks are working class because they live bad life conditions, they are poor and they serve the Elois. There is a beauty conditions in this society, the Morlocks symbol of the ugly and Elois opposite one. Moreover, the class distinction is seen as Morlock and Elois. The Morlocks evaluate and use their time efficiently and they seem obliged to do so. But the Elois are wasting this time and exploiting the sunlight. The Time Traveler lost the machine but the Morlocks repair it without any expectations so this kind of biological and class requirements. Our hero seems them as a bad monster, maybe they are not. The hero came from the high-level class so this affected him or just their looking. As always, when the bourgeoise is portrayed as pure, clean and lazy. The working class is also shown as the exploited, who have to work constantly, have no time to enjoy and live. The Morlocks just tried to help to him but the Time Traveler can be seeing this action as theft. These changes and transitions took lots of time, the change happened in classical approach because the all changes happened in this social system between societies; which are inequalities, functions, boundaries, subsystems, environment and these changes happened in the whole. We cannot talk about the international changes because there is only Morlocks and Elois in the world. Also, there is no nations and states so we cannot talk about the macro level changes or the macro changes happened but these are negative changes because the changes can be negative or positive. There is a mezzo and micro level changes in the Eight Hundred Two Thousand Seven Hundred One. It can define like that there only two races and these are not having relationship each other without the serving. So, the hierarchy can be example for this. The macro level change can happen until this time, but this change disappeared before this basic life, there would be some global international systems and this can be effects all over the world. After that, the mezzo and micro level changes happened because the population is limited and these are groups. The changing seems like that it always happens in a good and increasing way, but it has decreases and increases. Also, there is no any religionist activity so the religions also disappeared in the societies. The time is like space, it is a universal context so all process takes place in time so we cannot understand the before changes, we comment in this story about changes.

In conclusion, we looked the sociological changes and transitions in ‘’The Time Machine’’. According to the story, we compared the future and our day on these issues and made comments about the social changes. There is no specific direction about the social changes. Everything can change, or things can happen in the opposite direction as opposed to predictive one.
